The honest answer is: there's no bad time to visit Manuel Antonio. But there are better and worse times depending on what you care about most β€” snorkeling visibility, wildlife sightings, crowd levels, or price. Here's the real breakdown from people who run tours here 365 days a year.

The Two Seasons

Costa Rica has two distinct seasons β€” dry (verano) and green/rainy (invierno). In Manuel Antonio specifically:

  • Dry Season: December – April. Less rain, calmer seas, better snorkeling visibility, more reliable kayaking conditions. Peak tourism β€” higher prices, more crowds, book well in advance.
  • Green Season: May – November. Afternoon rain showers (mornings usually clear), lush jungle, fewer tourists, lower prices. Excellent for wildlife and horseback riding. Rafting on the Savegre is best with higher water levels from August–October.

What most travel blogs won't tell you: the "rainy season" in Manuel Antonio typically means sunshine in the morning and rain in the afternoon. You can absolutely run a full morning of tours and be done before the clouds roll in. We run tours year-round and almost never cancel for weather.

Best Time for Each Tour

🚣 Ocean Kayaking & Snorkeling

Best: December – April. Calm seas and maximum water visibility (10–15 meters in the dry season vs. 4–6 meters in rainy season). That said, we run this tour year-round β€” the mornings are almost always calm enough, even in the green season.

🌿 Manuel Antonio National Park

Best: Year-round, but our favorite is May–June. The park is dramatically less crowded in the green season, the jungle is at peak lushness, and wildlife activity doesn't drop off significantly. Fewer tourists also means the animals are less habituated and behave more naturally β€” often a better wildlife experience than peak season.

🐴 Horseback Riding

Best: Year-round. Rain actually makes the jungle more atmospheric β€” mist in the canopy, cooler temperatures, vivid green. The trails are maintained well and the horses are comfortable in all conditions. We rarely cancel this tour for weather.

🌊 Savegre River Rafting

Best: August – October. Higher rainfall means faster water and more exciting rapids. The river runs Class III in the dry season and pushes into solid Class IV territory in peak rainy season. Both are great β€” it just depends whether you want a wilder ride or more time to appreciate the canyon scenery.

🐒 Sea Turtle Nesting

Best: July – November. Olive ridley sea turtles nest on the beaches in and around Manuel Antonio during rainy season. Nighttime turtle watches can be arranged through the park. Snorkeling encounters with turtles are possible year-round but most likely during nesting season.

Our Honest Recommendation

If you have total flexibility: late November through early December is the sweet spot β€” the rains have mostly stopped, the jungle is still brilliantly green from the wet season, prices haven't yet hit their December peak, and the crowds aren't there yet. It's genuinely the best of both worlds.

If you're coming in peak season (January–March): book everything at least 6–8 weeks in advance. The best guides fill up fast and the national park sells out its daily visitor quota regularly in February and March.

If budget is your priority: September is the cheapest month by far. The weather is wetter but Manuel Antonio is never unvisitable β€” just plan your tours for mornings and enjoy the dramatic jungle atmosphere in the afternoon.
